At the YMCA-YWCA, we understand that a narrow definition of wellness in both theory and practice can lead to unhealthy views and behaviours when it comes to girls' physical, mental, social and emotional health.
That’s why we have programs like GLOW (Girls’ Life of Wellness) which helps support young women and non-binary youth in all five Dimensions of Wellness: physical, social, emotional, spiritual and environmental.
During the program, youth meet in groups of 12-14 at the YMCA to have healthy skill building discussions and participate in wellness activities.
GLOW is driven by its participants' interests and skills, so each program offering is unique. In the past, girls have participated in activities like yoga, boxing, and Zumba, coupled with holistic wellness activities like making miniature Japanese Zen gardens, spoken word poetry jams, creating water bottle infusers, and going on nature walks. Additionally, girls have regular discussions on topics like body image, self-esteem, healthy relationships, puberty, hygiene, morals, and values.
