Being active, for some, can be seen as a chore.
But Charlie Bruce has seen the community and camaraderie that develops within sport clubs and organizations like the Kamloops Y.
An accomplished athlete, Bruce shares his passion for sports through volunteering in the community. He has played an instrumental role in organizing many sporting events, including the 1993 Canada Games, the 2006 BC Games, the 2011 Western Canada Games, the 2013 BC Seniors Games and the 2015 Canadian Masters Cross-Country Skiing Championships, all bringing accolades for being excellent provincial and national events.
Bruce also recognizes that seeking a variety of physical activities acts as a catalyst to new ideas, opportunities and experiences, as evidenced in his multifaceted approach to fitness, not only as an athlete but as a certified yoga teacher and an author of a book about Kamloops area hiking trails. Bruce offered his expertise in the School district teaching yoga as a way to reduce stress experienced by students, and says he “saw significant gains in both the mental and physical benefits of a structured yoga practice.” Today, Bruce maintains his involvement in sport organizing through the Kamloops Marathon, and as a volunteer at the Kamloops Y for the last 15 years, he continues to inspire and motivate others, and foster community connection through his love of fitness.
“When we embrace opportunities to share who we are and what we value,” Bruce says, “inspiration flows from us and to us. It’s been my experience that through my volunteerism, I receive far more than give."
